Quiet for a Reason
Yep, it’s been a month since I updated, but there’s a reason.
I’ve been jamming with my fellow geologists on two field trips, which make up part of my degree.
I’m not going to go into the specifics of the actual geology we encountered or what it meant, because I’m in the process of writing the second report on the topic. So briefly, the field trips were;
Te Muna
The sedimentology and paleoenvironment field trip took place in the Wairarapa, which is the region to the east of Wellington. It was pretty cruisey to be honest. The days were short, my group’s field area was 10 minutes walk from the camp, and the write up work was relatively easy.
On the last night we had a formal dinner and presentations of our findings (or, anything for that matter, related to the trip).
My group presented the geology of our area in the style of Mills and Boon, which worked reasonably well, but the pinnacle of the evening was Aiden’s impersonation of Deano, one of our tutors. People were literally rolling around on the floor. Classic.
Kekerengu
The structural geology field trip took place south of Blenhiem, in the South Island.
Kek was hardcore.
10 hour field days, at least 3 hours of work once you got home and totally sub standard food (hey, it’s important : ).
Despite that, I still had fun and everyone else seemed to agree. We didn’t have a formal dinner at the end, but the staff involved put on a sweet Valentines Day dinner on the 14th. Completely unexpected, and a lot of fun. We were paired of at random, and I ended up with Sally, which was pretty sweet, since I could have ended up with Alex or Dhiresh who were made honorary ladies due to the imbalance of the bloke/chick ratio. Well, maybe Dhiresh wouldn’t have been so bad. Actually, it could have been hot!
Anyway, today marked the return to lecture based university. There were many, many first year students on campus today, with their new shoes, and new bags, and optimism and uncrushed spirits. Soon they will become as bitter and twisted as anyone who’s been hanging around uni for more than a year. Until then, enjoy your ignorance, SUCKERS!
